You’re so excited to get away…time to unwind, unplug and maybe see a little sunshine. Yet, a little bit of you is worried that you’ll back-track and lose some of the hard work you’ve put in over the past couple of months in both the kitchen and the gym. That’s not necessary! I am going to share with you 6 simple ways to stay fit on vacation that you can utilize anywhere.

OH…don’t worry! These tips and tricks won’t interfer with reading a book by the pool or stretching out on the sand. A mid-morning run or a late afternoon workout will fit right in.

6 Simple Ways to Stay Fit on Vacation:

We can get so “out of sorts” when traveling. We seem to start with good intentions but “life happens” unless we make a daily plan. Here are a few places to start…

  1. TOOLS: Think a bit ahead. Are you flying or driving to your destination? Amazon carries a great assortment of resistance tubing and bands that fits easily in luggage. My favorite tubing set has handles, ankle straps, a door stopper, and 5 levels of tubing. I also prefer using fabric-style exercise bands that don’t slip, slide or fold up.
  2. LOCAL OBSTACLES: OK, you’ve arrived and it’s the sun is shining…Look around the area (both physically and online) to find the nearest set of stairs or a park. These offer a number of options for a quick HIIT workout. Park Benches offer the perfect place to do “squat sits” & modified push-ups. A set of stairs can offer a quick burst of cardio without having to jump or run. Anchor your resistance tubing around a tree, light pole, or similar, and your upper body workout is limitless! Does your rental come with pool access? Get in and jog, kick, bounce or swim. These are great, non-impact activities that focus on the lower body.
  3. WALKING/RUNNING: Pack your walking or running shoes and go out and explore. New places offer so many new sights…just make sure to take your phone/map app to track your distance and to find your way home.
  4. FOOD & ALCOHOL: There seem to be so many choices and so little time when I go on vacation. My husband and I are amateur “foodies” and love to try the local fare (including beverages) so eating out is typical. Heck, we were introduced to a whole new breakfast style while traveling…check out my post on the Del Mar Power Scramble. It might take your breakfast to a whole new level. To help keep the food budget in check (as well as our stomachs,) we typically stop at the local grocery or market to stock up on breakfast, lunch, and snack foods. Since I am in the wine biz, we ALWAYS bring or ship wine to our destination. This ensures our beverage of choice is free from added sugar and other junk. We do purchase a few healthy cocktail hour options like veggies and hummus to go along with the bottle of the day. This ensures we’ve added few more raw items to our systems before heading out.
  5. WATER INTAKE: Do you feel bloated and sluggish after a few days on the road? Are you eating salad greens and fiber when possible yet still get “backed-up”? I used to feel this way when traveling until I started bringing my favorite water bottle along for the trip. Pack it in your suitcase or throw it in the car. Having a “system” for consistent water consumption is key!
  6. SLEEP: How many hours do you typically get at home? Remember, you are on vacation to not only see new sights but to rest your body and mind as well. Try to plan your hours of sleep by deciding which nights you might be “hanging out” later than normal and adjusting your morning routine accordingly. Remember, alcohol greatly affects your quality of sleep so make sure to mix LOTS of water between glasses and stop your beverage of choice at least 2 hours before bed.

Keeping active and feeding/fueling yourself well while on vacation will take a bit of planning. But if you put a few of these suggestions into place, I guarantee you will feel better and come home feeling more rested and ready to step back into your regular fitness routine.
